John Constantine series announced on HBO Max with new developments!

New details on a Constantine series in the works at HBO Max have reportedly been revealed. Last year, it had been reported that J. J. Abrams was developing a live-action Constantine series for the streamer with Bad Robot Productions serving as the production company. Nothing else about this small screen adaptation has been revealed since, but a new report sheds some light on the tone of the series.

John Constantine, Hellblazer Vol. 1: Marks of Woe

According to The Illuminerdi, the HBO Max series will reimagine John Constantine with a “darker reinvention of the character.” Written by Guy Bolton, the outlet also claims that the series “will be less focused on religion, and more focused on the horror elements from the Constantine comics.” As the series will be hosted on HBO Max, there’s no telling at this point just how dark the show just might get, but they’ll have the freedom to go as far as needed on the premium streamer.

Of note, it appears the character will be recast entirely instead of using a version of the character previously played by actors like Keanu Reeves or Matt Ryan. Last year, rumours began to circulate suggesting a direct sequel to Reeves Constantine feature was in the works.. Instead, as the initial report suggests, producers are looking for a BIPOC actor in his 20’s to play the eponymous lead.

Constantine remains one of DC’s most popular characters, so the idea of a major new series should be exciting for fans. Keanu Reeves’s 2005 Constantine movie remains something of a cult-classic, and Matt Ryan’s recent turn in the role has been highly praised as well. The character has yet to find widespread success outside of a more dedicated comics fan base, but a major platform on HBO Max could launch the next iteration of the Hellblazer to a larger viewership.

There’s also the potential that the new Constantine show could be tied to past rumours of a Justice League Dark series at HBO Max. A Swamp Thing show aired on DC Universe in 2019 to critical acclaim, but it was cancelled shortly after its premiere. A new Constantine project could signal a Swamp Thing revival on HBO Max, with both characters possibly coming together for a future Justice League Dark adaptation. It remains to be seen if the new Constantine reports hold true, but if they do, DC fans have plenty of reason to get excited.
