Marvel Reclaims the Rights of The Defenders and The Punisher From Netflix, All In !

Yes, Now we are seeing a future for these guys in the MCU! Marvel Studios (and Disney) officially regain the character rights to Jessica Jones and Frank Castle, aka the Punisher. Those rights have been under the domain of Netflix ever since the streaming giant cancelled both series on February 18, 2019. Now, Marvel and Disney have finally retained the rights to all the Defenders!

Daredevil: The Man without Fear

Daredevil was the first Marvel series on Netflix, debuting in 2015 and running for three seasons, starring Charlie Cox as Matt Murdoch/Daredevil. Jessica Jones was the second series to arrive on the streaming service, also in 2015, starring Krysten Ritter, which spanned three seasons. Luke Cage, starring Mike Colter, debuted in 2016 and ran for two seasons, with Iron Fist, starring Finn Jones, also spanning two seasons starting in 2016.

Marvel has yet to confirm any concrete plans with The Punisher, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage or Iron Fist characters as of yet. What Marvel will do with these characters now that it has the live-action rights to these characters remains to be seen.

The Netflix shows were initially part of the MCU, but references to the wider universe became increasingly infrequent as they continued. While it’s not known if Marvel will use any of these characters or the actors in the MCU again, Daredevil actor Charlie Cox was recently seen on the set of the upcoming third Spider-Man movie. Of course, the Spider-Man films have their own complicated rights situation, with the films co-produced by Marvel and Sony, which owns the live-action rights to the character.

Daredevil: Born Again

Disney+ is now exclusively the home of live-action Marvel shows. Marvel Television closed down last year, and its final series, the supernaturally-themed Hulu show Helstrom, was cancelled in December after a single season. The first MCU show on Disney+ was WandaVision, which premiered in January, with Falcon and the Winter Soldier set to follow in March.

Beyond that, upcoming Marvel shows include Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye, She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and the crossover event Secret Invasion.
