Sasha Calle DC Universe’s New Supergirl to Debut in The Flash Movie!

There’s a new Supergirl in town and that’s Sasha Calle! Supergirl will arrive in the DC universe with the upcoming movie for The Flash. Director Andy Muschietti announced on social media Friday that Sasha Calle, a Daytime Emmy nominee for The Young and the Restless, has been cast in the role — making Calle the first Latina Supergirl.

Muschietti revealed the news by releasing a video of the time he told Calle she got the part. “Little me would be like, ‘No way!'” the actress said through tears. “Can I freak out for a second?”

As per Variety, Muschietti reportedly auditioned more than 400 actors prior to casting Calle, the first Latina star ever to portray Supergirl. In DC canon, several actors have donned the red and blue Spandex, starting with Helen Slater in the 1984 Warner Bros. movie, Laura Vandervoort on the CW series Smallville and most recently Melissa Benoist on the Warner Bros. TV series of the same name.

The Flash will mark Calle’s first film role. She had received a Daytime Emmy nomination last year for The Young and the Restless, in which she played the role of Lola Rosales.

The film, the first standalone adventure for the Flash following appearances in Justice League and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, features Ezra Miller as the eponymous speedster known as Barry Allen. The DC Extended Universe entry has been in the works for some time now, having suffered several setbacks since it was originally expected to hit theatres years ago.

The Flash is set to star Ezra Miller, reviving the speedster role he played in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Justice League. The character’s standalone film has cycled through more than a few versions including a reportedly “darker” script Miller wrote with comic scribe Grant Morrison before landing on Muschietti in the director’s seat with a script by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey, Bumblebee).
